Yamaha Lcd Tv

How Do I set up my Yamaha AV Receiver?
I have a Yamaha HTR-5830 AV receiver. The problem I am having is how to connect it to my television (Acer LCD TV)so that the sound from normal free-to-air TV comes through the speakers.
I can connect my DVD player to the receiver fine, although I’m not sure I have used the best possible way to do it. I have used the composite cables to connect from my dvd to receiver, then just the yellow composite to connect from the monitor out jack to the AV1 jack on the TV.
If anyone can help, that would be awesome.
Ok, thanks for your reply Dave.
I’ve had a look at the TV and the problem is that it only has input jacks, no output. So I’m guessing that I cannot run any sound or video from the TV to the receiver, this is troubling.
Hiya Jaye,
Sounds like your heading in the right direction. If your DVD player has digital optical or digital coaxial outputs, connect that instead of the white and red ones you have.
Also, for superior picture quality, if you DVD player has component video outputs (they look a bit like the yellow/white/red cables, but they are red/blue/green) AND your TV has component video inputs, connect them instead.
Otherwise, what you have done is fine.
You may also consider hooking up the audio out from the monitor out to an audio input on your TV. That way you can hear audio from your DVD player through your TV without requiring the receiver to be on. Your choice.
Anyway, onto your question about free-to-air stuff. Is this the TV channels that you receive from the tuner built in to the TV set? If so, look for an audio ouput on your TV (either white/red, or possibly optical), and connect that up to your receiver too. You’ll need to choose a different input to where your DVD audio cables are going to.
That should be it. Good luck.
Dave
