First, I’m not a big fan of Philips products. We’ve had nothing but problems with their products in the shop.
Two, the biggest problem with an LCD is people turn the back lighting up too much. Too much back light and your blacks and colors wash-out. Turn your back-lighting down. In a very brightly lit room like our showrooms, I will not use more than a 7 or 8 (out of 10) on this setting.
Now adjust your brightness, which is your blacks. Its best to do this during a dark scene. Turn your brightness down to produce your best blacks, but you want to see the details in the dark areas of these scenes. Turn brightness down too much and you will see no details, Turn it up too much and your blacks wash out.
Next, adjust your contrast (picture). Contrast is your whites. Turn the contrast up to get good, comfortable whites. Turn this up too much and you lose your details in the lightest areas of a scene. Adjust the contrast with a good bright/white scene.
Finally, adjust your sharpness. Use just enough sharpness control to give you good, sharp edges. Too much sharpness control and you can start to produce artifacts along your edges.
P.S. If you decide to replace your Philips look at the Samsung LN-40A650. Best, sharpest picture quality I’ve ever seen in any TV!
