How do I ground a outlet?
I just moved bought a older home and I am in need of help. Most of the plugins are old and have no ground. I have my computer and my new 52 inch LCD hooked with one of those adapters. How can I ground that one outlet? As temp fix can I run some copper wire out my window and into the ground? HELP
Good for you to want to know how to ground the outlet, rather than to take the simple step of attempting to bypass the need for a ground with an adapter.
There are no universally “right” answers to explain how to ground an outlet; and to better insure the job is being done properly you should consult or hire a qualified electrician. In a new home, or a home where new electric service (“panel”) is being installed, typically one or two 10’ long copper coated rods are driven into the ground and connected with appropriate clamps wire etc. A second common way to ground a new home is by adding reinforcing steel (re-bar) to the foundation and encapsulating it with concrete – know as a “Ufer Ground”.
So with all of the above said, the most common way to ground an outlet in an existing home is to attach a wire to the cold water line of the house. The assumption is that the copper or iron piping is connected to a series of pipes that run into the ground and would thus serve the purpose of dissipating electricity. However, the electrical flow could be interrupted by special fittings (dielectric unions) designed to protect pipes constructed of differing materials; or by the use of plastic pipe which is often used to connect the water meter to the house.
It may also be possible to connect a wire to the metal box that houses the outlet – again this isn’t a sure-fire “fix”.
